About This Quote

Edgar Degas, a French sculptor and painter, was one of the most famous artists of 19th century. He is famous for his several paintings of dancers and his artistic interpretations of the human figure. The floor in his works has a great importance, but it did not mean that he was a modern artist. His works had hidden messages which did not require a commentator to find out. For example, Degas painted his dancers in black and white shades.

In this way, he wanted to give emphasis to their bodies and make them stand out from the background. On the other hand, he made them stand on dark floors so that the viewer would feel the pain of their feet. In this way, Degas wanted to express that the pain of dancing is more than just physical.
